Latest News

Next Meeting: August 16th

Our speaker will be Derek King - his talk is entitled Living in Mongolia
Competition:
An unusual Travel Item!
We will be back in the VIllage Hall for this meeting after our very comfortable "picnic" which was held in the cool of St Mary's Church rather than the baking Glebe Field!! ...a very sensible idea - and a very enjoyable evening with the usual delicious contributions to the picnic! Thank you everyone ...and also to the churchwardens!

Many Thanks also
to everyone who made cakes for the Bike Fest refreshments  - another successful event (even in the heat!) made even better by such yummy cakes! Thanks also, of course, to those manning the stall!

Next Meeting: July 17th -    NB 6 for 6.30pm

Our July meeting is to be our Annual Picnic. It will be held on the Glebe Field next to the church - and you will already have been asked to bring along a 'pot luck' dish either savoury or sweet. Please also bring along your own choice of drink, a plate and dish (the desserts are always very yummy!) and glass (preferably not actual glass on the field, please!), cutlery - and a seat or rug.  ...and just in case this fair weather is not here to stay throughout the summer, we will luckily have the use of the marquee (used at the Bike Fest on the field on Sunday 18th) for shelter if needed!
Please note you should arrive earlier than for our inside meetings!
...See you there - it's always a good evening together!

Many Thanks to all those who helped to make our Jubilee Celebrations such a success!!

Our June meeting included a very interesting talk from John Whitfield entitled "Britain and the Great War" which, in particular, put into perspective the build up of global events which triggered it. Also of great interest were the wonderful selection of artefacts and memories brought in by members as entries for the competition.
      Thanks to everyone who entered!

Next Meeting: May 17th

Speaker:  June Barton      'Queen of the Saltmarshes'
LIFE ON THE LINCOLNSHIRE SALT MARSHES - Fenland Family History Society (fenlandfhs.org.uk)
  'Pigsties, Privies and Old Coppers'.

The competition is to bring anything Pig related!

Our Annual Business Meeting on April 19th proved to be a very enjoyable, relaxed, sociable evening. Our new committee was duly elected but it felt very strange to be seeing Monica step down after so many years of valuable service. ...what Monica hasn't known, organised and taken part in over the years!!... She has been our President, Secretary, Team Captain and has often stepped in when no-one else could. We have really valued her help and enthusiasm - and, of course, for many years, she has also held roles on Federation committees. Luckily, Monica will remain an active member - and who knows what she may turn her hand to next!! Monica was presented with a bouquet of flowers on the night - a small token of our appreciation for so much work over many years!
Thank You Very Much, Monica!

Next Meeting: March 15th

Our Speaker will be Keith Appleyard – Secrecy, Spies and Scandals         Competition:  Imaginary Spy Codename.
Please note - the WI Notts Federation will be setting up its table top shop this evening - enjoy supporting it if you can!!
Our Outings are starting up again!  Please see our Outings and Events page!

Our Walk proved to be a great success; the rain couldn't damp everyone's spirit and enjoyment! Special "thank-you"s to Rachael and Barbara for the route and everyone who helped with the lunch!

We are pleased to be holding a Welcome Walk for the county on March 4th and look forward to meeting other Notts. Federation members on that day!   Enjoy your walk - and lunch!!

"Overflow" parking will be available at the Waggon & Horses - please the join us before the start of the walk at the Village Hall - just  along the road from the Waggon!

Next Meeting: February 15th

Our Speaker will be John Clark who will be telling us about RInging Birds at Treswell Woods in North Notts.. This was a project started by Jean McMeeking's husband. John will also be bringing his beautiful collection of feathers!                 Competition: An Interesting Feather
Sales Stall: Scarves, Hats and Gloves

Think back...
Please write a few notes for Barbara who is preparing a record of our history
on any significant Bleasby WI activity, outing or event which stands out for you!!

Welcome to 2022 - and our Very Best Wishes to you all!
Firstly, many apologies for not having updated this site for a few months ...it must have been the excitement of having meetings and activities to go to in person at last!!

I'm happy to report that we've enjoyed excellent talks in September, November and in January (changed from the expected talk to a very interesting - quite scientific - look at carrara marble and Michelangelo's sculptures).  We've also celebrated our birthday with a super evening and meal at Ashmores in Radcliffe on Trent - and a festive December meeting - so good to be "socially mixing" again!!. Thank you all for the "pretty parcels" which were very gratefully received by the Women's Refuge in Newark.

Next Meeting:  Tonight!!  September 21st

Many apologies for not posting our August news!... We are indeed "up and running" and enjoyed a sucessful August meeting - the first in the Village Hall for far too long - and a stimulating talk on the Yemen.
Our September meeting - 7:30 this evening (but many arrive a lot earlier!) - is about Nottinghamshire writers. Don't forget to bring your menu and payment for our October Birthday Party, any donation you wish to make for Friday's Friendship Coffee Morning towards MacMillan cancer support - and " a writing implement" for this month's competition!       Thanks!

Next Meeting: July 20th
Our Annual Picnic!

Our early meeting...: Meet at 6.30pm on the Glebe Field next to the church. Bring along your promised dish, a chair, cutlery, plate & bowl and a drink & a glass. Chance your luck at the raffle! ...and at last, enjoy all being together again!

Update!

You guessed it... we will be on Zoom at 7pm on Tueday for this talk!

Our speaker will be Annette Taylor talking about "All at Sea" - her experiences as a Cruise Hostess. We are unsure at the moment whether this will be in person at the Village Hall or via zoom.... watch this space!

Extra Event!!
We shall be saying a fond farewell to Ann on Tuesday 15th June.

It will be at the Waggon and Horses in Bleasby at 6pm, some sandwiches (and a cake)  will be provided, drinks hot and cold will be on sale. An area will be reserved for us to use. There will be an informal 'speech' to wish Ann 'All the Best'  as she moves from Bleasby to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

Next Meeting: May 18th.

Good news !
We will be able to meet again for our next meeting.
Tables will be reserved at the Waggon & Horses both inside & out at 7 pm.
Hot & Cold drinks will be on sale. There will be a letter trail on the Glebe Field-
please bring your own pen!
Please let Terri know by May 12th if you will be joining us.

AND
We need one volunteer to be responsible for the competition book and another
to write a short article about the WI for the Bleasby News four times a year.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Waggon.

Welcome to our new committee!

Firstly, however, a big thank you to the outgoing committee! There has been quite a big turn round of members with six members leaving and four new faces joining. Thank You to all those who've been representing us for the last few years and fulfilling many roles  - but especially to Pam and Lorraine who have served for many, many years and have contributed so much to the success and smooth-running of Bleasby WI.
Your new committee will be headed up by Terri, our new President. We wish her an enjoyable tenure! Chris H., Denise, Jane and Di  are our new members in the team. Thanks to everyone taking on a new "term of office" - we look forward to new ideas ...especially when we can all meet up again and start doing activities and visits together!

Next Meeting: April 20th

Our April meeting is traditionally our Annual Business Meeting - watch this space as to how it will be conducted! We will be voting in a new committee - most probably with some changes amongst the 'officers'. The outgoing committee, with Monica at the helm, has done such a good job in keeping us in touch throughout the pandemic ...I've no doubt we will be looking forward to a new era optimistically!
...but before that, may we wish you all A Very Happy Easter-time!!

"Distanced Meetings" !

We have now held three meetings over the Zoom meetings platform and were pleased that so many members were happy to join them. We were entertained well by our chosen speakers and on a wide variety of subjects: we watched chocolate making, a surprisingly eye-opening tale of Beatrix Potter and, for our March meeting, a talk about the Framework (Knitting) Museum nearby at Ruddington. Of course, the big hope now is that very soon we will be able to start meeting together again. Perhaps we may even be able to go on trips, in which case, the Ruddington Museum will be on our shortlist judging by the interest shown by our Zoom audience.
Keep well, everyone - and we'll hope to return to something like normal soon!

2021   A New Year.... !!

...and we hope it will be a happier one than 2020 for everyone and that, one day, we'll all be allowed to get together again!
Monica's doing a great job in coming up with ideas to keep us interested/busy/amused; I'm sure everyone enjoyed watching the zoom class (for our January 'meeting') on chocolate making. I wonder how many have felt compelled to indulge since?!!
Off the back of our zoom meeting of gentle Pilates, the county is now running regular classes - First and third Tuesdays usually at 2pm but 1pm on Feb 1st.. County is running lots of online classes or talks - see details under our Events tab or on the County website!
Watch this space for details of our future meetings!

Keep well ...and keep in touch!

Late August...
Sorry there has been so little news on our website...

I should have written of how our President, Monica has been doing a great job in maintaining contact and keeping us all connected. All those who managed to attend our "distanced" DIY picnic on the Glebe Field really welcomed the opportunity to have a catch up with what we'd managed to achieve during lockdown and, of course, to recognise friends with new hairstyles!! Many Thanks also for our cotton 'goody bags' - they - and their contents (especially for our cream tea makings!) were much appreciated! Earlier we had all received an origami tulip - again another reminder, as we displayed them in our own homes, that our friends each had a similar 'connecting' ornament.
It was sad to learn of the sudden death (not Covid related) of another past member, Liz Cousins, who had contributed much to our WI.
Take care, everyone ..and, hopefully, we will all be able to meet again for our Birthday celebration - perhaps still at a distance! - in October ...if not earlier!!

SO ...we didn't meet in March  (or April!)  - and I look forward to being able to tell you when we can meet again! Meanwhile, all of you stay safe ...take care during your isolation!

Monica has sent you all a message wishing you well - please contact any of your committee if you need something or just company - we're here to help (however remotely!!). Do look at the county website for more "guidance" ...and  I know Wendy is putting some entertainment in place there for us all to enjoy!

Remembering Phyllis...

Picture
5th May 2020

- Today is Phyliis' funeral - and the circumstances mean we cannot be there - but we will be especially thinking of her today. Phyllis' contribution to our WI was huge - within days of her arriving in the village, she became a member - and very quickly was co-opted onto our committee. PictureThe Bleasby Team setting out
We are currently putting the final touches to our plans for our challenge in September to travel to Llanfairpg in Angelsey where the WI began in the UK 100 years ago.

Six members are travelling in pairs by whichever means they can without using money or their own vehicles so they are relying on their wits and/or the goodwill of others.

As part of our annual support for a local charity we are raising money for The Children's Brain Tumour Research Unit at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre. Good luck to all our members taking part.

Samaritans Purse

PictureJane hands over the bags of knitting
Today the mountains of knitted scarves, hats and gloves were collected from Newark WI HQ to be sent on to the Samaritans Purse appeal.

The photograph shows Nottinghamshire Federation chairman, Jane Jefferson, helping to load the car with just some of the WI donations.
Bleasby WI members have helped to knit several items, which are being sent on to Eastern Europe to ensure that less fortunate children have a practical present this coming Christmas. Well done to all our busy knitters.
